hear! hear!

i promised myself that i won't get involve in this because of his

oh-i-live-on-the-world-stage attention grabbing ways. but this is getting

really annoying. personal as it may be i have to say this, this is a

mailing list which (the last time i checked) tries its very best not to bar

or censor any postings which is why i'm sure all of Patrick's postings are

allowed through untouched. i applaud the list-owners/moderators for that.

we may not be able to shut someone up, but i think we can certainly ignore

him. once his craving for attention is denied its regular feeding, it will

die a natural death.

you don't stand alone Russel, you don't.

Let me admit to some private doubts about the wisdom of the present course

of action.

I posed to myself a few analogies, and asked what I would think wise in

such situations:

For example, I imagined a situation where zealous animal-rights campaigners

were continually protesting in front of fur shops, pet shops, even meat

shops. They use megaphones day and night, basically drowning out opposing

messages. Occasionally they even heckle customers of these shops. Do we say

that they are merely exercising a right of free speech, or have they

crossed some boundary, if so, what? Is it justifiable for the community to

step in to restrain the animal rights activists' actions?

Another analogy I came up with was a situation where sellers of sex and

erotica "take over" a neighbourhood. The posters on bus stands are all

bought by them. The lighted advertising boxes are taken up by them. Shops

display their wares openly. Residents complain that the character of their

neighbourhood is damaged. The merchants say they are "bloody prudes", and

that they are merely using freedom of speech, not coercing anyone to

patronise, nor even agree with their free and easy approach to

sex. However, some 90% of the residents are not happy to see their

neighbourhood become like this. Have they no recourse? Must they continue

to suffer the "free speech" of the merchants?

Many have complained that the "character" of Signel has been adversely

affected of late. Is this an analogous situation?

It is NEVER a good idea to restrain somebody from speaking his mind. There

are enough people here who will clearly say so, when they dont like

something.

If Patrick wants to hang up signs all over signel, glorifying toilet sex,

there are plenty guys here able and willing to tear these signs down again

and hang their own billboard in place.

We dont always have to like or agree with something written here, thanks god

we have the freedom to react!
